Japan Travel Essentials: What I Actually Used and Loved

Travel

Introduction

Getting ready for a trip to Japan? I’ve been there—and I totally get the excitement (and maybe a little packing stress too). In this post, I’m sharing the travel items I actually used and loved during my Japan trip. These aren’t just popular products—they’re things that genuinely made my travel smoother, more comfortable, and a whole lot more fun!

Whether you’re traveling to Japan for the first time or planning a return visit, I hope this list helps you pack smarter and feel more prepared.

Before You Go: Planning & Packing Must-Haves

  • Compression packing cubes – Total lifesaver when trying to fit souvenirs on the way home!

If you don’t want to pack them ahead of time, you can find cheap plastic ones at Daiso stores in Japan for about 100 yen each. 😆

  • Universal travel adapter – Japan has Type A plugs, but make sure your charger fits. I used this one and it worked perfectly.
  • Kindle Paperwhite – Lightweight and perfect for flights, trains, or quiet evenings.
And this one comes in PINK!
  • Luggage scaleI always buy too many souvenirs, so I use this to weigh and shift items between my carry-on and 2 suitcases to stay within airline limits.
  • RFID-blocking passport holder – Kept my documents organized and safe. Again comes in PINK LOL.
  • Portable phone charger (power bank) – Taking photos and videos all day in Japan drains your battery fast! A good power bank is absolutely essential.
I personally use the Anker PowerCore Slim 10000 PD, and it’s been a total lifesaver! Taking tons of photos and videos in Japan drained my phone battery fast, so having a lightweight, fast-charging power bank was essential.
If you prefer a cable-free option, magnetic power banks like the Anker 334 are also super popular among travelers!

On the Plane: Comfort & Health Essentials

Packing can be fun!

Getting Around in Japan: Smart Gear to Bring

  • Retractable IC card holder – I clipped mine to my bag and used it for Suica/Pasmo everywhere.
  • Compact umbrella – Japan’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring and summer.
  • Lightweight sneakers – I walked a lot, and comfy shoes were a must.
  • Portable Wi-Fi or SIM cardI usually just use my own carrier’s roaming plan because I don’t like carrying a pocket Wi-Fi, but many travelers seem to love using eSIMs like Airalo! You can also rent a pocket Wi-Fi at any major airport in Japan after you arrive, and it’s easy to return it at the airport before you leave.

Everyday Life in Japan: Small Items That Made a Big Difference

  • Foldable shopping bag – Super useful at convenience stores and when picking up random goodies.
  • Reusable water bottle – Japan has vending machines everywhere, but trash bins are rare. Bring your own bottle and refill when you can.
  • Pocket tissues & wet wipes – Not all public restrooms have paper…😂 You can easily get these at any convenience stores there.
  • Travel slippers – For ryokan stays or visiting someone’s home. Plus, they fold flat!
You can get these at Daiso stores in Japan for about 100 yen!

Bonus: Items I Didn’t Expect to Use—But Totally Did!

  • Coin purse – Japan still uses coins quite a bit. Having a small one made checkout a breeze.
  • Mini laundry kit – A few detergent sheets and a travel clothesline came in handy for longer stays.
  • Snack stash – Having a couple granola bars in my bag saved me on long train rides more than once! Try to get some at convenience stores in Japan!

Wrap-Up: Final Thoughts & Packing Tips

Packing for Japan doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Focus on comfort, practicality, and just a little bit of “what if” planning. These items aren’t all musts for everyone, but they definitely made my experience better.

💡 I’ve linked the exact products I used (or similar ones available on Amazon) throughout the post. Feel free to check them out if you’re building your Japan travel kit!

Wishing you an amazing, stress-free adventure in Japan! 🇯🇵❤️
